Article 1. City Elections

The election of city officials shall be conducted in all respects as provided by the laws of Kansas governing the holding of city elections.

At all city elections the polls shall be open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m., unless different hours are set and publicly announced by the county election officer.

General election shall take place on the Tuesday succeeding the first Monday in November 2017. Succeeding elections will be held every two years for all such governing body positions whose terms have expired. A mayor and two council members shall be elected at one election, and the remaining three council members shall be elected at the succeeding election. The mayor and all council members shall have four year terms.

(a)   The term of office for newly elected city officials shall commence with and include the date of the first regularly-scheduled City Council meeting of the month of December, following the certification of the election of such officials, or such other date as shall be established by Resolution passed by the governing body of the City in conformity with the provisions of K.S.A. 25-2120.

(b)   Every person elected or appointed to city office, before entering upon the duties of such office shall take and subscribe an oath or affirmation as specified in K.S.A. 54-106, and amendments thereto, and every such oath or affirmation shall be filed with the city clerk.

In accordance with K.S.A. 25-205, and amendments thereto, any person may become a candidate for city office elected at large by having had filed on their behalf, a nomination petition or a declaration of candidacy, accompanied by any fee required by law. The nomination petition must be signed by five (5) of the qualified electors of the City of Mayetta.
